Preventing our most vulnerable clients from falling victim to “scammers” is essential.

One of the benefits of the digital tablets provided through our regional CONNECT service, which is available in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, is it does not allow unknown applications to be downloaded.

All of our tablets include a Mobile Device Manager, which proved key recently in protecting one client following a phone call to say her “bank account was being used to launder money” and, as a result, “the Serious Fraud Office needed to move money out of her account”.

She was then asked to download an application called Anydesk onto her tablet, which would have given remote access to her device, providing an insight into anything the tablet was being used for, including online banking and shopping, and enabling changes to be made to the tablet.

Fortunately, due to the security function on the CONNECT tablet, when our client attempted to download the application as requested, it was rejected, preventing access and enabling our client to alert the Delta Wellbeing team.

If this had been a standard tablet without a Mobile Device Manager, the application would have been downloaded successfully, providing the scammers with access to the device.

In addition to preventing online fraud occurring, the Delta Wellbeing team has been working closely with Carmarthenshire County Council’s Trading Standards team to protect clients from falling victim to telephone fraud, through the use of True Call devices.

These devices are installed by the Delta Wellbeing team and help monitor incoming calls to prevent scam and nuisance calls in the future.

As part of the CONNECT service provision, as well as digital tablets, which have been helping families stay connected throughout the covid pandemic, clients also receive support through bespoke Technology Enabled Care equipment tailored to individual needs, access to a community response team 24/7 to assist with non-injurious falls and wellbeing calls.
