Supporting dementia with dignity – Betty & Sarah story
A diagnosis of dementia can bring a wave of emotions, confusion, grief, anxiety and a deep sense of uncertainty. For Sarah, those feelings became all too real when her mum Betty was diagnosed with early-stage dementia.
“She was still fiercely independent,” said Sarah. “She didn’t want to give up her home or her routine. But I was terrified something would happen when I wasn’t there.”
Many families share that fear, especially when a loved one is determined to stay independent but needs more support to stay safe.
That’s when Sarah found Delta Wellbeing and the CONNECT service.
Tailored technology for dementia safety
Through CONNECT, Betty was provided with a personalised package of technology-enabled care (TEC) explicitly designed with dementia in mind:
-
A red button lifeline for immediate assistance
-
A fall detector to alert Delta’s response team if Betty fell and couldn’t call for help
-
A GPS tracking device, offering reassurance in case she became confused or disoriented while out and about
These tools didn’t just keep Betty safe; they gave her the dignity to continue living life on her terms.
“Mum didn’t feel like she was being watched,” Sarah said. “She felt supported, and that mattered to both of us.”
Emotional support through wellbeing calls
Dementia can be a lonely journey. That’s why the proactive wellbeing calls included in the CONNECT service made such a difference.
The regular check-ins offered more than just health monitoring; they provided friendly conversation, emotional reassurance, and human connection, which can be especially valuable for those living with memory loss or confusion.
“It’s not just about the tech,” Sarah said. “It’s the people. The Delta team actually cares; they talk to mum patiently and kindly. That means everything.”
Emergency support that makes a difference
One evening, Betty experienced a fall while alone at home. Her fall detector triggered an alert, and within minutes, Delta’s response team was on the scene.
They quickly assessed her condition, called emergency services, and stayed with her until Sarah arrived.
“She could have been lying there all night,” said Sarah. “But thanks to CONNECT, someone was there. It changed everything.”
A lifeline for families affected by dementia
Betty has continued to live at home with Delta’s CONNECT service, supported by TEC, regular calls, and a responsive team that genuinely understands the needs of people living with dementia.
“It’s allowed me to be a daughter again, not just a carer,” Sarah said. “I can go to work, sleep at night, and live my life knowing mum is safe — and still herself.”
