"You saved my mum’s life": Sheila’s story

At 95, Sheila had always valued her independence, living alone in her home in Neath Port Talbot. But with poor mobility and a diagnosis of osteoporosis, her family worried about her safety. 

One afternoon, Sheila experienced a fall while tidying up. As she bent to place a plate on the table, she suddenly felt light-headed and collapsed, hitting her head. She was discovered on the floor under the table with a cut to the back of her head, bleeding and unable to move. Her lifeline alarm had been triggered, and Delta Wellbeing’s specially trained mobile response team was immediately dispatched. 

Despite the unexpected closure of the Briton Ferry Bridge, the responders reached Sheila as quickly as possible, carried out vital checks, and stayed with her until the ambulance arrived. 

Sheila’s daughter Catherine said:  

“I take my hat off to the guys. Briton Ferry bridge was closed, but they still got there.” 

After being transferred to the hospital, doctors discovered that Sheila had fractured her pelvis and developed pneumonia. Further investigation revealed that her heart had stopped for three seconds during the incident.  

She has since been fitted with a pacemaker and is now recovering well in hospital, with plans to return home soon. 

While in Baglan Hospital, a wonderful doctor said that when she collapsed, her heart was stopping every three seconds. She’s now on a pacemaker,” said Catherine. 

“I can thank the responders enough for calling 999.”  

Catherine said the lifeline alarm and response service had almost certainly saved Wendy’s life.  

I cannot speak highly enough of both responders, they were professional, caring and their quick response has very likely saved my mother’s life.”
